The MEd in Mathematics Education is designed for current math teachers or teacher leaders at any grade level. Students in the program will enhance their skills, work toward permanent certification, or prepare for studies in a doctoral degree. Students will choose between two specializations, elementary and middle level mathematics, or secondary level mathematics.

The MEd in Mathematics Education is designed for certified teachers interested in furthering their knowledge, working towards permanent certification, becoming a teacher-coach, or planning to pursue a doctoral degree. Also, individuals pursuing their Level 1 certification through IUP's Certificate in Mathematics Education can also earn their MEd in Mathematics Education at the same time. The MEd provides opportunities for teachers to embrace the challenges of teaching mathematics to a diverse population of students in an ever-changing world. In the process, students will learn about new instruction strategies and innovative teaching techniques that are crucial for current math instruction. There is an even balance between courses that focus on content in-service mathematics teachers need, as well as courses that focus on pedagogy.
Research suggests that the knowledge today’s math teachers need is substantial, but quite different from that required by professionals in other math-related fields. Subject knowledge remains an emphasis in our master’s degree. However, we also focus on making essential connections between the mathematics you study and the mathematics you teach.

Our program is designed specifically with flexibility in mind for current teachers. The MEd in Mathematics Education, Specializations in Elementary and Middle Level Mathematics or Secondary Level Mathematics are offered entirely online. As a student, you will be able to take classes in any order, entering at any time and studying only during the semesters most convenient for you.
