Thank you for your interest in creating a day-in-the-life video based on your day at your internship. We are excited to see what your video entails! If you have any questions, please contact Kira Wertz at kewertz@iup.edu

When You’re Done Filming

After you are done filming, please email Kira Wertz (kewertz@iup.edu) and Emily Smith (ejaros@iup.edu) for further instructions.

Examples

  •
  •
  •
  •
  • Film vertically (like for Snapchat/TikTok/Instagram Story).
  • When answering the interview questions at the end of this document, use the front-facing camera and be near the camera for the best audio.
  • POV shots are a great way to talk about what you’re doing and capture good audio. (POV=point of view. The camera is your eyes, showing the viewer what you see without you in the shot. You can talk over this shot to explain what we’re seeing.)
  • When you appear on camera to talk directly to the camera, find good light for your face, whether from a window or another light source.
  • When you are filming a shot that focuses on an object or something that you want to talk about, count to 10 in your head before you move the camera away from the subject.
  • This video does not need to be filmed in chronological order. You can film it over the course of a couple of days if that is easier.
  • “Hello, I’m ____ and today I’m going to take you along on my internship with ____.
  • “I start my day at [time]. This summer, I am living [with parents/in the city/with friends/etc.] and I [drive/take the bus/walk/bike] to my internship site.”
(Film part of your commute when it’s safe—please don’t film while you are driving.)
  • (Show exterior of the building where you work.) “Here’s my building!”
  • “I work [in ____ department/with ____] and…
(Describe what the department does for the organization. Then, talk about what you do specifically.)
  • “Today, I am working on ____.”
  • Film some clips of what you’re doing. You can talk over them or just film the activity. If someone can take the camera and film you doing the work, that would be great, too.
  • Show some of the people whom you work with on a typical day: supervisor, fellow interns, company employees, etc.
  • Film some b-roll clips of any workplace logos, wall murals, etc. that can help set the scene.
  • Don’t be afraid of shooting too much. The more we have to work with, the better!
  • Have someone film you standing in front of a logo, sign, or a place at your internship that lets the viewer know where you are and what you do. Look directly at the camera and smile. Hold this shot for 10 seconds.

You can film these at your internship, where there isn’t a lot of loud background noise, or you can film the interview questions at home—whatever you’re comfortable with. Just make sure you use the front-facing camera and find good light for your face.

  1. Introduce yourself and your internship (“My name is ____ , I’m a junior/senior _____ major at IUP, and this summer I’m doing an internship with _____.”) Even if you already said this when you were filming at your internship, say it again as a backup for audio.

  2. Briefly describe your internship responsibilities. (Same thing: even if you already did this when you were at the internship, do it again for backup audio.)

  3. What has been the most fun thing about your internship, and/or what are you most looking forward to?

  4. How did you find out about your internship? Talk about the application process: when did you first apply, did you do an interview, how long was the process, etc.

  5. Did an IUP faculty or staff member help you with the internship process, such as introducing you to the internship or helping you navigate the application process? If they were helpful and supportive, please describe how.

  6. Why do you think it’s important for students to do an internship? How does it complement what you’ve learned at IUP?

  7. Looking back on your time at IUP, what advice would you give to students who are just starting out?
