Get Certified to Teach Family and Consumer Sciences

With our 24-credit post-baccalaureate certificate program, you will complete the requirements for Pennsylvania teacher certification in family and consumer sciences. The certificate can be completed in fewer than two years.

If you have a bachelor's degree and would like to teach in a family and consumer sciences classroom in Pennsylvania, you may be eligible for the intern certificate option. For intern certificate-eligible candidates who are offered a teaching position, you will begin teaching while earning your credentials. The coursework will align clinical experiences, observations, and assessments with competencies and skills needed to equip teachers for the FCS classroom.

Candidates will also learn how to accommodate and adapt instruction for students with disabilities in an inclusive setting and assist English language learners.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Teaching Certification program offers students the opportunity to meet Pennsylvania requirements for Level I Certification for pre-Kindergarten-12 as a post-baccalaureate student. Graduate-level coursework is taught online, and content will be embedded in multiple experiences. Student teaching will be completed in an FCS secondary classroom in Pennsylvania.

The certificate gives you the opportunity to pursue careers in teaching at the secondary and post-secondary levels, cooperative extension, and community education. The Family and Consumer Sciences certification can be used to teach related programs in Career and Technical Schools in Pennsylvania (Childcare Services, Foods, Service Occupations, etc.).

Classes and Requirements

All coursework will be completed online with teaching experience happening in a secondary Family and Consumer Sciences classroom in Pennsylvania. Candidates must successfully pass the Family and Consumer Sciences Praxis (5123) and the Fundamental Subjects Praxis (5511) during their program to apply for their teaching certificate.

You must also have passed 12 credit hours (undergraduate or graduate) or related work/volunteer experience in family and consumer sciences curriculum in the following topic areas: Family and consumer sciences; Career, community, and family connections; Consumer and family resource management; Personal and family financial literacy; Fashion/clothing and interior design; Parenting and child development; Food, nutrition, and wellness; Family and interpersonal relationship.
