B. Smith, Christine Zuzack Members Absent: None Proceedings: The meeting began at 2:30 pm with the introduction of the two new student members to the committee. The single sign-on capability for students that was discussed at the January meeting was brought forward at the February ACPAC meeting. The issue is being elevated to TUC for consideration and feasibility. Paul Grieggs will bring forward at TUC the proposed expansion of student email from 20 MB to 50MB to bring IUP more in align with what other universities offer students. Information was distributed in regard to the P: drive and some of the modifications that will be initiated. H: Drive Students to get an increase in the capacity of their H: drive by contacting the Student Computing Helpdesk. This often happens for education majors who need additional space for their portfolios. The standard allowance is 50MB but it can go as high as 750MB. Patrick McDevitt will contact Mark Anthony in the Career Services Office to see what is being done by that office with student portfolios. There may be some opportunities for coordinating these efforts. Student records are maintained for 60 days after graduation. For portfolios, maybe a copy could be burned and given to the student to retain? Technology Education and Training Educating students about the technology available to them is challenging. Only students enrolled in the CUSP program receive any type of formal technology training when they arrive on campus. Graduate students receive a five minute introduction during their fall orientation. Transfer students have expressed their interest in receiving more information. Students who live in the Residence Halls receive information in advance about the campus network. The OHRL assists students during move-in to establish computer connections in their rooms. CDs are distributed to each student at check-in. Many institutions offer a once credits orientation class that acquaints students with all of the academic and administrative policies and procedures of the school. It would be beneficial if IUP could offer such a course. How do you get students to be attentive to these requirements? Approximately 4,000 students do complex transactions without any support from University personnel. The others have a wide range of educational needs. Some ideas for discussion include development of a WebCT course that would instruct students how to use the technology resources on campus. Sponsor a technology fair at the beginning of the semester to showcase IUP’s technology services. Develop an informational piece to be sent to all students upon admission to IUP to highlight the computing options and the expectations for electronic communication. Expand the “Stats for Lunch” to offer more programs on a regular basis. Initiate a coordinating team that would help to promote the various technology training activities across campus. There are a number of informational pages on the IUP website. These seem to be somewhat confusing with students often uncertain about which one best suits their needs or answers the question at hand. The Tech Zone is a new collaboration of the TSC and ATS. This is an effort in the right direction. Chris Zuzack will contact Cathy Dugan from the Advising and Testing Center to see what opportunities may be available for providing technology education sessions during student orientation. IUP Website Redesign There seems to be many subcommittees meeting on the redesign of the IUP webpage. What are the major concerns and issues? Comments can be directed to Mark Piwinsky.
